There are SO many Civil War  books and resources, I really couldn't list them all.  BUT here are a few of my favorites:

This is probably the best single volume history of the Civil War era.  It won the Pulitzer Prize in 1989, and is still unmatched.
McPherson does an excellent job of covering the events right before and right after the war as well as the war itself.

Grant has gotten a raw deal from historians for decades. He was both strategically and operationally the best general the Union produced during the war. Chernow's biography finally does him some justice.

Lincoln built one of the most contentious and gifted Cabinets since George Washington. Goodwin's book is the best book on Civil War politics and how Lincoln was able to keep the Union together and focused on winning the war.
